Properly installed and maintained smoke and carbon monoxide alarms will provide an early warning alarm to your household in the event of an emergency.
These alarms are the best safety devices you can buy to protect yourself, family, friends, and your home.
Types of Smoke Alarms
Smoke Alarms are categorized into three basic types:
Ionization - Activate more quickly when a flaming, fast moving fire occurs
Photoelectric - Quicker at sensing smoldering, smokey fires
Dual Sensor - Combine ionization and photoelectric into one unit
The installation of both types of units or a dual sensor alarm is recommended because it is un-predictable what type of fire my start

Hardware, home supply, or general merchandise stores also carry smoke alarms.
Installation
Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home including the basement, and outside each sleeping area. Since smoke rises, smoke alarms should be installed at the highest portion of the ceiling or wall to ensure a quick notification of a fire.
Maintenance
Smoke alarms should be tested monthly to check the functionality of the detector. Simply holding the test button down for 10-15 seconds is sufficient.
Batteries in smoke alarms need to be replaced about every 9-12 months. The Delran Fire Department encourages the following:
CHANGE YOUR CLOCK, CHANGE YOUR BATTERIES
SMOKE ALARMS HAVE A LIFE SPAN OF 8-10 YEARS After this time the unit needs to be replaced. The date of manufacturing can be found on the back of the unit. No Date= Older than 10 years old!!
Is your home not equipped or does not have fully functioning smoke alarms??
If not the Delran Fire Department will come out and install a smoke detector(s) for you. Click Here fill out or download the application.
